Gobi Desserts

Dont underestimate its tiny size, it has got mighty power! That is the overpowering of sweetness that can sweeten you to cloud 9. No kidding! I dont really have a sweet tooth and 3 pieces is enough to make me lose my taste buds. Therefore, a friendly advice is not to finish all at one go.. take a break in between. =p Nevertheless, my favourites will be the 'pink macaron with strawberries and cream' and the 'coffee and dark chocolate opera'...yummy~ Certainly, i will still go back to Gobi for sweet treats but will opt for The Chocolate Factory instead.

Location: Katong Mall/Central
Price: $12.80 for 6 pieces
Rating: Good!

Mango with Pomelo + Sago

If you love mango, you'll love this to bits! I like it because it has the natural taste and sweetness of mango. And genourous amount of fresh mango cubes, sago and pomelo bits are added for the extra 'oomph'. The sweet, sour, bitter combination makes it more addictive. A great dessert to chill on a hot day! Other recommended desserts i've tried is the dried beancurd with gingko nuts and steam carrot cake which doesnt taste like a mash of flour. Really must try..

Location: Chinatown, Mei Heong Yuen Dessert
Price: $3.50
Rating: Die die must try!

Dim Sum

You dont have visit chinese restaurants for dim sum treats. You can enjoy 'homemade' style dim sum for just $2.00 per plate at Xiang Mei's. No gst or service charge! For most of their dishes, shrimp meat is often used for a better taste and texture. If dim sum doesnt fill, you can order cantonese styled tze char as well.

Location: South Bridge Road, Xiang Mei Restaurant
Price: $15++ (for 2)
Rating: Good!

The Roti Prata House

They claim to serve the crispiest prata in Singapore and its highly recommended by The New Paper. No doubt the crispiness is there but it lacks the 'airy chewy effect'. Rather, its more of like biting on a chocolate chip cookie.

If you happen to pass by this shop along Thomson Road, i would recommend you their Mee Goreng and Curry Chicken. The mee goreng is served with fresh cabbage, cucumber, some assorted veggie and beancurd. If some chicken meat is added, it would defintely taste more heavenly. Chicken curry is light and the meat is tender and smooth, no regrets and not to be missed!.

Location: Upper Thomson Road
Price: $12 (avg for 2)
Rating: Above average.

Cafe Oliv

A cosy and clean ambience at Cafeoliv makes it a great dining place for food lovers. Every dish served gave its 100% effort, be in presentation and taste. The best part is, it surprises me with little details which most restaurants will probably neglect. Especially those carrot garnishes, its pan-fried (i think) for its crispiness. Garnishes should not only be appealing to the eye, but should also echo or complement the flavor of the dish. =)

We had set meals which consist of a soup of the day (i think its some veggie soup), main meal and drink. On top of that, we ordered appetizers.

Our soup of the day!

The appetizer, German Chix Cheese Sausage (if i am correct). One of my favourites, not overly cheesy and rich. Nicely grilled and indeed it is quite filling for an appetizer!

Seafood Linguine..it will certainly make a perfecto dish if topped with generous amounts of seafood.

My tastebuds had a romantic affair with this rich and succulent slice of grilled salmon. I would honestly say, this is one of the best grilled salmon i've tasted. Not too soft or hard. Just right. Beneath is a generous amount of mashed potato and fresh greens. Overall, the taste is subtle yet pleasing and it makes a healthy meal. =)

See that? Its battered not breaded. Infact i wanna order onion rings that time..sadly my stomach was overloaded. =s

Gelare's Waffles

Yup, its my first time trying Gelare's choc chip waffle..I simply love its warmth and spongyness! Chocolate chip is evenly mixed in e waffle, topped with wild strawberry flavoured ice cream, fresh cream, peach slices and lightly garnished with choco sauce.Awww..smells good..taste wonderful. =D

Botak Jones

You can enjoy authentic american style western food with restaurant quality right here! The prices are affordable from minimum of $6.00 for a regular size and $10 onwards for large (infact it is XXL). You get to enjoy your meal hot and fresh cos food is prepared once you place your order. Be there early, i waited for an hour for my meal! As compared to most western stalls, they serve only chilli and tomato sauce. At Botak Jones, you can get to enjoy both HP sauce and Malt vinegar!

Here are some dishes i strongly recommend, havent got the chance to try out the rest (due to the limited space in my stomach). But i will certainly make my trip down again. =)

Giant chicken hotdog..

The sausage seems no big deal when i first set my eyes on it cos these kind are easily available in most supermarkets. But it surprises me with its crispy pork casing which actually snaps when you sink your teeth in it. Awwww~ The sensation is real good~! (Price: $5.50)

Fish & Chips

The most popular item on the menu. In my opinion it doesnt taste like those stereotypical breaded fish & chips. As for most of them, crumbs are tasteless and fish is unseasoned. This is different. Because, only premium pacific dory is used and fish is seasoned before breaded with japanese bread crumbs. Remember to dip it lightly with tartar sauce so as to avoid covering up its original taste. Fat wavy fries are generously served with spices lightly sprinkled over. Delicious! (Price: $6 for reg, $10 for large)

Di Tanjong Katong Cafe Restaurant

This halal-chinese restaurant is a great dining place for lunch and dinner. Highly recommended dishes are Hong Kong mee (above) and their range of western food. The noodle is one of the best i've ever tasted, for just $5, you get a medium serving size. Real value for money! I tried Fish & Chips the other time, the breaded dory fish is fresh and crispy, served together with fries and cooked brocoli for only $8.50. The service is excellent and makes my stay enjoyable!

Price: $5.00 ++
Rating: Very Good!

Astons Specialties

Be prepared to wait for at least more than 15mins. The wait is worth it.

Grilled fish with herbs set. You can choose any 2 sides from e menu, this is wat i like. Herb sauce taste light to my taste buds..e dory fish is nicely grilled. Colestraw is simply fabulous! Its more than jus carrots and cabbages. You cant stop munching..i love e fries cos of e bbq flavoured pepper on it. Taste perfect!

Still not enough we ordered garlic bread. Another good one..

Chargrilled chicken chop. Pure chicken thigh meat.. which is not exactly my taste.. but its tasty in its own way.

Location: East Coast Rd
Price: $20++ for 2
Rating: Must try!

Heng Kee Hakka Yong Tau Fu

One of the best Yong Tau Fu i've ever tasted. Comes in a set meal which consists of a drink of your choice, noodle and main dish. Noodle taste perfect to me, with a teaspoon of chilli at e side. Tip: Add lots of chilli, its not at all hot, rather its e 'special taste' which taste kinda addictive. The soup is light and rich at e same time, e 'tau pok' and 'tau foo' are generously stuffed with fresh fishmeat fillings. Yummy!

Kolo Mee

Alas! I found this shop tt serves kolo mee. The above is Char Siew kolo mee which looks very similar to our local wantan mee. Note, the noodle used is different. With a wriggly maggie mee like texture, it gives a complete different sensation to your tastebuds as compared to the usual wantan egg noodles. Every bite is very Q and you jus crave for more. Its served plain w/o sauce but once you add one teaspoon of chilli, you'll see the magic! It all lies in the special blachan chilli, very tasty and not too spicy. So add more chilli!

Prata

My irresisitable prata! Other than just Jalan Kayu's prata, you can find another great one right here at Haig Road's. Their pratas always have the 'Crispy on the outside and soft inside' touch. The curry is thick and rich in flavour, you cant stop dipping!

Location: Haig Road (Near Tanjong Katong Rd)
Price: $0.60 plain, $1.20 with egg
Rating: Die die must try!

Vegetarian Bee Hoon

Unlike most vegetarian beehoon i've tried, none can beat this. Most beehoon are stir fried with light soy sauce thus leaving it bland and tasteless, worst of all u gotta rely on extra gravy for taste. As for Tian Ci's, they added vegetarian oyster sauce, you'll taste the difference. Spring rolls are another favourite of mine, remains crispy even when its slightly cold. The chinese cabbages are light and tasty and not oily. Thumbs up!

Fish Soup

Hello! Happy New Year! The Makanguru is back in 2007 to bring you the best food at e best price in town! =D

Introducing Kallang Sliced Fish Soup.. actually its not located at Kallang, jus a board name. =x

All credits goes to the 'SOUP', its the heavenly taste of this soup that makes everything marvellous. Other than fresh fish meat, the soup plays an extremely impt role, else its not worth wasting your time in e queue. Added with fishhead bones (or other bones), chinese wine and flavouring makes the soup light and sweet. I personally recommend fried fish meat instead of fresh sliced fish cos its so thinly sliced that you could hardly taste anything. Upsize it to $3.00 and above for extra fish meat and you can get more veggies on request (no extra charges!)

Price: $2.50
Location: Marine Parade Hawker Centre
Rating: Very good!
